What to expect from and how to prepare for appointments
During an appointment:
Please wear loose fitting clothing to allow for ease of movement during an IPT session. You will be asked to remove your shoes for ease of assessment and treatment.
An initial IPT appointment will last up to 1½ hours. This will include a thorough oral & written intake and postural assessment, time on the table, and exercise and lifestyle recommendations. Follow-up sessions are generally about an hour.
The techniques that are primarily used on the table are Muscle Energy Technique (which is an assisted form of stretching) and Strain Counterstrain (which involves putting a muscle into a slackened(relaxed) position for 60-120 seconds). Neither of these techniques should be painful, and often involve verbal feedback from you to ensure that they remain pain free. Communication between you and the therapist is encouraged throughout the session, because it is very helpful in fine tuning the treatment. Clients state how gentle the Positional Therapy is and how relaxed they feel.
After an appointment:
Most likely you will simply experience less pain and a greater range of motion in your body. Occasionally you may feel sore, achy, or have a headache for a while after a session, as the waste products are being flushed and your body is adjusting to its new state of balance. Opening up muscles can dump cellular waste into the bloodstream, and keeping well hydrated by drinking plenty of water will help to flush the toxins efficiently from your system. IPT also improves your posture, so you may feel taller or notice that your center of balance has shifted, so on rare occasions for a brief time following the session you may not be quite as steady on your feet.
While you may experience immediate long-lasting relief from one session, usually what is causing the pain is the way you are using your body. In order to remain pain-free, you must become an active participant in your own healing process. Often a wellness plan with a few simple exercises and stretches along with changing contributing habits or improving the ergonomics of your workspace is all that is needed.
Follow-up sessions are recommended if you are dealing with an acute condition, so progress can be monitored and exercises adjusted until sufficient progress has been made. Some people also find it helpful to come back for regular “tune-ups”. However, often this isn’t necessary if you keep up with your wellness plan.
Rates:
Initial Hands-on IPT session (1¼ to 1½ hours) – $85 (includes Assessment, treatment, personalized Wellness plan)
Follow-up Hands-on IPT sessions (about an hour) – $75. (includes treatment & follow-up with Wellness plan) Angela has completed her IPT training, she is a certified IPT Professional. Rates changes depend on if travel is involved.
Virtual Initial IPT Session (1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours)-$75 (includes Virtual Assessment, individualized stretching techniques, personalized Wellness plan) via Zoom or similar virtual connection.
Virtual Follow-up IPT Session (up to an hour)- $65 (includes ongoing pain-relieving & ergonomic techniques & follow-up with Wellness plan) via Zoom or similar virtual connection.
Couples IPT Session- In-Person Bodywork (1.5 hour)- $145 (includes lessons on how to help yourself & your partner with pain & discomfort. Personalized wellness plan for you to be able to complete on each other at home)
Personal Training Functional Exercise Program (1 to 1.5 hour)- $80 for 3 Classes(may include Standardized Senior Fitness Tests & Balance tests, one-on-one Exercise/Yoga/Balance training, individualized functional exercise and/or active aging program. This is more for post-Rehab exercise needs, beginners, or for those with dealing with ongoing pain and limitations.)
Yogaease or Somatic Yoga or Balance/Functional Exercises Class (1 hour)- $25( you may have one-on-one with Angela individualized teaching or share this time with a friend & split the cost). Yoga may be chair, standing, or floor work as appropriate for the individual.
Class package of 4 (1 hour) Sessions- $90 (these sessions may include a friend attending with you)
Active Aging Mentoring/Older Adult Teaching Resource (45 minutes)-$45 (Tried & true resources & experience from working with older adults for over 35 years)
Gift Certificates are available. Sliding Scale options for IPT or Personal Training Classes may be offered on a limited basis.
