There were a lot of things that my Momma was right about and usually she was right about most things. Man, there sure were things that I wished I had listened to her about too. However, we all make our own choices. She always joked, “Lord knows I’m not perfect, but I’ve got every right to be”! She was loads of fun and loved to dance. She also loved to cook. I was spoiled with her and my paternal Grandmother’s, “Mom Paulk” everyone called her, cooking. Now, not everything was healthy that they cooked. The desserts, cakes, pies, fudge, cookies were the best. Living in South Georgia, we had access to friend’s fresh produce from their farms and my Dad always had a garden. I have very fond memories of fruits & vegetables being canned, frozen or “put-up” someway or the other. The smells in the house were amazing. How many of you got to sit under shade trees and shell peas, shuck corn, eat fresh watermelon & cantaloupe, etc? Maybe some of you still do!
Most all Mom’s tell us to eat our veggies and to eat healthy. My parents were pretty good examples of that, except for the white biscuits, lots of Sourdough Starter bread, desserts, fried chicken, fried fresh fish, etc. But then Dad and his holistic beliefs starting telling us about no more white bread or sugar, and to purchase wheat bread only. Back then it was usually Roman Meal Bread. So that started all kinds of nutrition diets, like the watermelon diet at our house. I do believe that our body is our home and we need to take care of it. Eating healthy and making wise choices of what we put in our mouth is the start of it all! So eating our veggies as Mom said is something that we all need. The US Department of Agriculture has some good basic information to help older adults with wise food choices https://www.myplate.gov/. There are a lot of differences of opinions and resources on nutrition guidelines. Feel free to share your resource in the comments section. Be wise with your choices of foods and use moderation as a key.
This just let’s you know a bit more about me and my experiences and that my Momma was right! However, I do not recommend eating my Grandmother’s squash cookies. What memories do you have that you would like to share or resources for nutrition?
